Recommended Imaris Optimization Steps:

  • Download and install the latest video card drivers directly from the manufacturers website, likely either NVIDIA or ATI. Do not use Windows update.
  • Process all data sets on a local drive; due to network timeout settings, we do not recommend using a network drive
  • Check that you have the proper Texture display cache set in Imaris. It should be set to the level of graphics card RAM.
    • File > Preferences > Display
  • Check the Data Cache Memory limit setting in Imaris; this should be set to about 60% of the total CPU RAM installed on your workstation. For example, if you have 16 GB RAM, I would set it to about 10,000 MB. Especially if this is to be used as a primary image analysis workstation.
    • File > Preferences > Calculation > Data Cache > Memory Limit (RAM)
  • Reduce the number of commands in History to 1
    • File > Preferences > Calculation > set "Maximum Number of Commands in History" to 1.
  • Set the Cache File Path to a folder that is on a drive different from where you are accessing your data files. For example, if your data files are stored on the D: drive, set your Cache location to the C: or E: drive - pick a drive with as much free space as possible.
    • File > Preferences > Calculation > Data Cache > Cache File Path
  • Disable the Spatial Statistics unless you are sure you will need these statistics (more information about the Spatial Statistics can be found by selecting Help > Statistics Reference); these statistics take a long time to calculate and are not often used.
    • File > Preferences > Statistics > expand the menu for the Spots and Surfaces modules > uncheck the box next to "Spatial" > OK > restart Imaris.
